The nuclear Power Plant Angra 2 completed 10 years in July, having produced up to now about 94 million of MWh - enough energy to supply the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia together for five years or São Paulo for four years. "The performance of Angra 2 in those 10 years has been excellent before the best power plants in the world. The results can be mainly attributed to the commitment and teamwork of the employees; to the planning and execution of work with high level of professionalism; to the investments in equipment and to the obtained operational experience. Angra 2 represents a guarantee, with total security, availability and reliability in supplying of electric power to the National Interconnected System (Sistema Interligado Nacional)", celebrates Carlos Antonio Mazzaro, superintendent of Angra 2. On July 14, 2000, occurred the first criticality of Angra 2, that is, the first chain reaction of its reactor. A week later, on July 21, the second nuclear power plant was synchronized to the electric network, contributing, together with Angra 1, for the National Interconnected System - though the commercial operation happened a few months later, in February 2001. Since then, the power plant shows efficiency indicators that surpass those many similar power plants - with a reactor type PWR (pressurized water), the most used around the world. Last year, Angra 2 had an outstanding performance, occupying the 33rd position in production among the 436 plants in operation worldwide, according to the American publication Nucleonics Week, specialized in nuclear energy. Furthermore, in relation to the performance indicators of Wano (World Association of Nuclear Operators), Angra 2, compared to the 50 best U.S. power plants, occupied the 21st position. |
